Please nominate Female-identifying Africans. There are 6 places on the list!
Hi! I don’t really know how to get started with this, or explain in a concise way what I’m trying to do, so bear with me. I have, for a couple of years, bought Time magazine. Now, I know it’s not particularly representative – but coming from a small country with little international analytical media, it was better than nothing. I’ve collected Time 100 issues over the years – partly out of interest in figures I may not know, and partly for inspiration. Unfortunately, like the majority of media, the Time 100 is not representative. In 2014, the Time 100 had 41 females, when the UNSD list the world female population as just over 50%. I’m sure, as you get into further statistics – ethnicity, age, sexuality, other genders – it only gets worse. I’m going to try and fix that. But I need your help. I can do the statistics, but I shouldn’t be the person to name the names. So as each category comes out – one a fortnight – I invite you to nominate people of note, people of influence, news-makers and name-takers. I’m not going to say x number should be in entertainment, x number should be politicians, but please give me as much variety as possible. Then, after 3 and a half months of nominations, I’ll list the nominations in each category for voting on! I can’t cover every part of every demographic - I’m trying just to cover ethnicity and gender in the first instance. For simplicities sake, I’m using the same geographical separations UNSD use – Africa, North America, South America, Asia, Europe and Oceania – because I just couldn’t get my head Please, please, if you have any suggestions about this process – from non-discriminatory language to the best way to get people to vote, let me know!! I welcome your suggestions! You can email me at any time at [email protected] (Please note – for all world demographic statistics I’m using the official United Nations Statistics Division – you can find the spreadsheet I’ve created under the resources tab, and this is where I’m pulling the numbers from). There will be, in alphabetical order: · 6 Female Africans · 6 Male Africans · 30 Female Asians · 30 Male Asians · 6 Female Europeans · 5 Male Europeans · 1 Female Oceanian · 1 Male Oceanian · 4 Female North Americans · 4 Male North Americans · 3 Female South Americans · 3 Male South Americans · There is one extra space – I wanted to make sure there was a space for at least one gender fluid person, although if a person is male- or female- identifying, please include them in that category. I just wanted to make sure there was space for non binary/assigned gender whilst still trying to correct the male-leaning of these lists. Please nominate people of different sexualities as well. It’s going to be hard to make sure at least 5% of the list is Lesbian and 5% Gay, but I’m going to try! If there is, for example, only one Lesbian Asian nominated, I might put them on the list and have just 29 places for the voting? Tell me what you think of that? I would of course be very very clear about that if I did do it. The categories start coming out next week! Please please pass this around, the more nominations, the more people who vote, the better! |
